What is Personal Care?

Professional Assistance with Daily Living Activities

Personal care services, also known as Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assistance, help seniors and individuals with disabilities complete essential self-care tasks they may no longer be able to perform independently due to age, illness, injury, or cognitive decline.

Our caregivers are trained to provide hands-on care with sensitivity and respect. Whether your loved one needs help with bathing, dressing, grooming, or toileting, our caregivers ensure their safety, comfort, and dignity at all times.

Personal care at home is an essential service for aging in place, post-surgery recovery, chronic illness management. And providing relief to family caregivers who may be overwhelmed with caregiving responsibilities.

Personal care services can be provided on an hourly basis for scheduled visits throughout the day or week, or as live-in care for those who need around-the-clock assistance. Our care coordinators will help you determine the right level of support for your loved one's needs.

FAQ

Common Questions About Personal Care

Answers to frequently asked questions about our personal care services.

A personal care aide helps with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility assistance, and medication reminders. They provide hands-on support while maintaining your loved one's dignity and independence. Personal care aides do not perform medical tasks like wound care or injections — those require a licensed nurse through a home health agency.
Yes, shower and bathing assistance is one of our most-requested personal care services. Our caregivers are trained in safe transfer techniques, fall prevention, and proper body mechanics. They help your parent get in and out of the tub or shower safely, assist with washing and drying, and ensure the bathroom is set up to minimize slip risks.
This is completely normal, and our caregivers are trained to handle it with sensitivity. We carefully match caregivers with clients based on gender preferences and personality. Most families tell us that after the first visit or two, their loved one feels comfortable and even looks forward to the caregiver's help. Building trust takes time, and our team moves at your parent's pace.
No. Personal care (what we provide) is non-medical, hands-on assistance with daily living activities like bathing, dressing, and meal preparation. Home health care is a separate medical service provided by licensed nurses and therapists — it includes things like wound care, IV therapy, and physical therapy but does not include the hands-on daily care that our personal care aides provide. Home health care is the only home-based care that accepts Medicare. Many families use both services together for complete coverage.
For most Southeast Michigan families, we can have a vetted personal care aide in the home within 24–72 hours of your first call. Hospital-discharge cases often start the same day. The intake call takes about 20 minutes, the in-home assessment is scheduled within a day, and the first shift is usually scheduled in that same window once a caregiver match is confirmed.
