What is Live-In Care?

A Caregiver Who Calls Your House Home

Live-in care is an arrangement where a professional caregiver resides in the client's home, providing around-the-clock supervision, assistance, and companionship. Unlike hourly care with rotating shifts, live-in care offers the consistency of one dedicated caregiver who knows your loved one's routines, preferences, and personality.

Live-in caregivers typically work in multi-day shifts (often 3-4 days on, then 3-4 days off), with a backup caregiver covering their time off. They require a private sleeping area and 8 hours of sleep, but are available if needed during the night.

This care model is ideal for seniors who need continuous supervision but don't require intensive nighttime care. It offers the benefits of 24-hour presence at a more affordable rate than hourly around-the-clock care.

FAQ

Common Questions About Live-In Care

Answers to frequently asked questions about our live-in care services.

With live-in care, one dedicated caregiver stays in your home and is available throughout the day and night, but sleeps during nighttime hours. With 24-hour care, two or three caregivers work in rotating shifts so someone is always actively awake and monitoring. Live-in care is ideal for seniors who need daytime support but sleep through the night. 24-hour care is better for those who need frequent nighttime assistance.
Yes, a live-in caregiver needs private sleeping quarters with a door — such as a spare bedroom or a den that can be closed off. They also need access to a bathroom. During our initial home assessment, we'll help identify a suitable space and discuss any adjustments needed.
Live-in care is typically significantly less expensive than a private nursing home room in Michigan, which averages over $10,000 per month. Live-in care also allows your loved one to stay in the comfort and familiarity of their own home. Yes. While live-in caregivers sleep during designated nighttime hours, they are available to respond to emergencies, bathroom assistance, and urgent needs throughout the night. If your loved one frequently needs active nighttime care (multiple wake-ups, wandering, or continuous monitoring), 24-hour rotating shift care may be a better fit.
Most live-in arrangements rotate caregivers on a 4–7 day cycle, with two regular caregivers alternating so your loved one always sees a familiar face. The caregiver who is leaving briefs the caregiver who is arriving (in person or via written handoff), so the routine, food preferences, medication timing, and any new concerns transfer cleanly. We never drop a stranger in for a long shift.
