The math flips as one-on-one hours rise. Assisted living bundles supervision, room, and board into one price. Home care is billed per hour. Once the daily need crosses about 12 hours of hands-on Personal Care, live-in care ($400–$500/day) or a memory-care community starts to look competitive. Below that threshold, staying home is nearly always cheaper.

The comparison is not just dollars. Home care preserves autonomy, keeps a spouse in the same house, avoids move-in deposits, and can start in 24–48 hours. Assisted living move-ins take 2–6 weeks, come with community fees and deposits, and are hard to reverse once furniture is sold.

The tie-breaker is usually cognitive: dementia with wandering, 24/7 supervision needs, and a home that cannot be safely modified push the case toward memory-care. Everything short of that usually stays home.
